Dear (NAME) MP

I am writing to seek your support in opposing the abolition of PGCE fee concessions and to ask for you to lobby Bill Rammell the Minister for Higher Education and Lifelong learning.

The National Postgraduate Committee and the West Midlands Area National Union of Students are both opposed to the removal of the concession and are working closely to co-ordinate our opposition to this.

The successful campaign to encourage students into teaching is threatened by the introduction of additional fees which will act as a disincentive to entering the profession. Initial teachers salaries are not particularly generous and the prospect of having to pay off these additional fees will only serve to further discourage people from pursuing teaching as a profession and further increase drop-out rates after training.

We believe that teaching remains an undervalued profession and its role in the formation and moulding of notions of citizenship needs to be further enhanced not denigrated.

I hope that we can gain your support in this campaign and would value your feedback to the National Postgraduate Committee and West Midlands Area National Union of Students. They can be contacted via Simon Felton, NPC General Secretary, C/O BUGS, Edgbaston Park Road, Birmingham, B15 2TU.

Yours Sincerely
